Why Microplastic Size Dictates Toxicity

When Other Traits Make Things Worse

Although size plays a leading role, toxicity is also shaped by a particle’s shape, surface chemistry, and polymer type. Irregular or jagged particles are more likely to injure tissue than smooth ones. UV weathering in the environment tends to produce more jagged, fragmented particles that exacerbate this damage [6,22]. Think about that the next time you drink from a plastic bottle that’s been sitting in the sun all day. 

Surface charge influences how particles interact with cell membranes. Positively charged particles, for instance, are more readily taken up by cells and are more likely to rupture lysosomal membranes after entry, further amplifying cellular stress [6,11].
