Organic food is often seen as cleaner, safer, and less contaminated by toxic chemicals than mass produced food. Organic certification doesnโt mean itโs microplastic-free
Organic standards regulate things like pesticides, fertilizers, and the makeup of the animalsโ food, but these standards donโt regulate certain types of environmental contamination. Microplastics, which have been found in agricultural soils, irrigation water, atmospheric dust, and processing environments, make their way into organic crops and food for animals. Because theyโre virtually everywhere and microscopic in nature, theyโre almost impossible to remove from these foods.
Once microplastics are present in the surrounding environment, organic production systems have no structural mechanism to filter them. Airborne fibers can settle on crops, particles in water can contact plant roots, and livestock can ingest microplastics through feed, water, and the ground itself. Organic labeling therefore exclusively reflects farming philosophy and use of certain chemicals, and doesnโt protect these foods from microplastic particulate pollution. Even if a food is labeled as organic, there can still be microplastics in organic foods.
Microplastics have been detected in organic milks
Analytical studies have found microplastics in milk across conventional, raw, and organic categories, demonstrating that organic dairy production does not eliminate contamination risk [1]. The scientists speculated that the particles come from multiple sources, including animal contact with contaminated water, airborne fibers in barns, and plastic materials used during milking and processing. These sources contribute to microplastics in organic foods.
The findings suggest that the milk can be contaminated with microplastics at virtually all stages of production. The cow can eat, drink, or breathe in microplastics and pass it to the milk. Textiles used for udder cleaning, worker clothing, and plastic packaging all contribute potential microplastic inputs [1]. The movement of the milk from the pail to another container can also contribute. As a result, organic milk reflects the same environmental burden observed in non organic dairy products.
Organic protein sources are also contaminated with microplastics
Research examining commonly consumed protein sources found no statistically significant difference in microplastic contamination between products purchased from conventional supermarkets and those labeled as natural or organic [2]. This suggests that organic sourcing doesnโt reliably reduce microplastic exposure. Instead, contamination appears to be influenced more strongly by processing, handling, and ambient environmental conditions. However, more research is needed to confirm this.
In these studies, because the brand or store didnโt matter, it suggests that microplastics enter the food chain at many different stages [2]. For example, microplastics from the air and processing environments are shared contamination points across the entire food supply chain, regardless of if the food is organic or not.
Organic farming practices can even introduce microplastics to food
While organic agriculture avoids synthetic fertilizers, it frequently uses composts and organic inputs that can contain microplastics. Research has shown that organic fertilizers contain microplastics and add them to agricultural soils [3]. These microplastics persist over time and accumulate each time compost or the organic matter is added.
The long term use of organic compost has been linked to increases in soil microplastic concentrations in crop rotation systems [4]. Once present in soil, microplastics can interact with plant roots and sometimes be taken up into edible plant tissues [5]. This shows that organic practices donโt necessarily reduce microplastic exposure.
Microplastics move through biological systems
More alarmingly, microplastics can act as carriers for other environmental pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals, amplifying their potential, negative biological impact [1]. Studies have documented microplastics in human blood, placenta, and breast milk, demonstrating their ability to move through the body after consumption.
These findings actually highlight a key limitation of organic food labeling. Certification addresses farming intent, but not environmental ubiquity. Unfortunately, significant changes will need to be made to many areas of food creation, processing, and distribution in order to entirely remove microplastics, assuming that itโs even possible.
Although there are microplastics in organic foods, organic is still the smartest choice
Organic food provides a wealth of meaningful benefits related to pesticide exposure, biodiversity, and soil health. However, current evidence shows that organic foods arenโt free from microplastics or consistently lower in microplastic contamination. Microplastics represent a class of pollutant governed by global plastic production, environmental ubiquity, and current food growing and distribution practices.
The presence of microplastics in organic foods raises significant concerns regarding food safety and the integrity of organic farming practices. Despite the rigorous standards that govern organic production, the inadvertent introduction of microplastics poses a challenge that cannot be overlooked.
